Supplements aimed at midlife women are a large and lightly regulated market, and the packaging is designed to look like medicine. This is a practical guide to reading a label, spotting the marketing, and working out whether what is in the bottle is what the label claims — before you spend anything.

Start with the regulatory reality
In most countries, including the US and UK, supplements are not assessed for effectiveness before sale, and they are not tested for accuracy of contents before sale. Regulators act after problems appear, not before.
That has a specific consequence: nothing on the front of the box has been checked by anyone. "Clinically proven," "doctor formulated," and "pharmaceutical grade" are marketing phrases with no defined meaning.
Independent testing has repeatedly found products containing less of the active ingredient than stated, more than stated, or ingredients not on the label at all — including, in some cases, undeclared pharmaceutical drugs in products marketed for weight loss and sexual function.
This is not an argument that all supplements are worthless. It is an argument for knowing how to check.
Look for third-party testing
This is the single most useful thing on a label, and most products do not have it.
Third-party certification means an independent organisation has verified that the contents match the label and that the product is free of specified contaminants. Marks to look for:
- USP Verified
- NSF Certified for Sport — strict on contaminants, because it is designed for athletes facing drug testing
- Informed Choice / Informed Sport
- ConsumerLab, which tests and publishes independently
These verify contents, not effectiveness. A USP-verified product still has to have evidence behind the ingredient itself. But it answers the question "is what is in here what it says?"
Note that certification costs money, so its absence is not proof of a bad product — many decent brands skip it. Its presence is meaningful; its absence is neutral.
Reading the label
Check the form, not just the name. Magnesium oxide and magnesium glycinate behave differently. Vitamin D3 is generally preferred over D2. Iron comes in forms that differ substantially in tolerability. The form is often where the useful information is — see magnesium for menopause.
Check the actual dose against what was studied. Products routinely include a fashionable ingredient at a fraction of the researched dose so it can appear on the front of the box. Look up the trial dose and compare.
Beware "proprietary blends." If a label lists a blend total rather than the amount of each ingredient, you cannot know what you are getting. This is usually done to hide that the expensive ingredients are present in trace amounts.
Count the ingredients. A product with 25 things in it almost certainly has too little of each to matter. Fewer ingredients at proper doses is a better sign.
Check the serving size. The dose on the front is often for three or four capsules, which changes the real cost per day considerably.
Look at "other ingredients" if you have allergies or intolerances.
Warning signs
- Claims to treat, cure or prevent a disease. In most jurisdictions supplements legally cannot make these claims — so a product doing so is either breaking the rules or hedging with an asterisk
- "Detox," "cleanse," "balances your hormones," "boosts immunity" — none of these has a defined meaning
- Before-and-after photographs
- A quiz that recommends its own products — the answer was decided before you took it
- Subscription-only with a difficult cancellation
- Testimonials in place of trials
- "Ancient" or "suppressed by the medical establishment" framing
- Proprietary blends, again
- Anything promising results in days. Real effects on skin, bone or muscle are measured over months
Ingredients specifically marketed at menopause
Common ones and where the evidence stands, briefly:
- Black cohosh — the most studied for hot flashes, with mixed results. Rare reports of liver injury mean it should not be taken indefinitely without awareness of that
- Red clover and soy isoflavones — inconsistent results
- Evening primrose oil — little support for vasomotor symptoms
- Wild yam creams — your body cannot convert the plant compound into progesterone. This claim is straightforwardly wrong
- Maca, ashwagandha, sage — limited evidence, mostly small studies
- Collagen — modest evidence for skin, largely industry-funded; see collagen supplements in menopause
- Creatine — genuinely well studied, but as a training amplifier; see creatine in menopause
- Vitamin D — worth attention because deficiency is common and consequential; see vitamin D and calcium
- Iron — only if you are deficient, confirmed by a blood test. Do not supplement iron on a hunch; see low ferritin in perimenopause

The safety part people skip
Supplements interact with medication. Some examples that matter:
- St John's wort interferes with a long list of drugs, including some hormonal treatments and antidepressants
- High-dose vitamin E, fish oil and ginkgo can affect bleeding, which is relevant before surgery — see HRT and surgery
- Calcium affects absorption of thyroid medication and some antibiotics — separate them by several hours
- Grapefruit affects the metabolism of many drugs
- Anything herbal if you have liver or kidney disease
Tell your doctor and pharmacist everything you take, including things you consider "natural." Pharmacists are an under-used, free resource for exactly this question.
Also: more is not better. Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K accumulate, and toxicity is possible.
The value question
Work out the cost per day at the studied dose, not the price on the shelf. A cheap bottle at a quarter of the effective dose costs more per useful serving than an expensive one at full dose.
And ask what else that money could do. A year of a mid-priced menopause supplement typically costs more than a set of adjustable dumbbells, or a validated blood pressure monitor, or several sessions with a pelvic health physiotherapist — each of which has better evidence than most of what is in the bottle.
If you do buy, plain single-ingredient products are usually the best value. A third-party verified vitamin D3 costs very little, and the same ingredient inside a branded "menopause complex" costs many times more.
A short checklist
Before buying, ask:
- What specific problem am I trying to fix?
- Is there evidence this ingredient helps that problem?
- Is the dose here the same as the studied dose?
- Is it third-party tested?
- Does it interact with anything I take?
- What is the cost per day, and what would that money buy instead?
- How long will I trial it, and what will tell me it is working?
That last one matters. Decide in advance what would count as an effect, and stop if it does not happen.
